PRESS RELEASE: Vice Chairman Doug Chaffee Hosts Third Annual Fourth District Kindness Award 

 Santa Ana, CA. (November 15, 2021) –Vice Chairman Doug Chaffee, Supervisor for the Fourth District, hosted the Third Annual Fourth District Kindness Awards Ceremony on Saturday, November 13 at the City of La Habra’s City Hall Atrium.

Following the Former Mayor Tom Tait’s initiative to encourage acts of kindness in the City of Anaheim, Vice Chairman Chaffee asked residents to nominate individuals who display exceptional kindness and/or community service and who live, work, or volunteer in the Fourth District. 

“Kindness is often defined as doing something to help another person without the expectation of receiving anything in return,” said Vice Chairman Chaffee. “After former Mayor Tom Tait promoted Anaheim as the City of Kindness, I was inspired to recognize the individuals in my District who have displayed exceptional kindness or community service.” 

A panel of judges scored the nominees' applications: The Honorable Tom Tait, The Honorable Bill Steiner, Charles Barfield, Joe Pak, and Lorena Moreno. After the judges scored the applications, an honoree with the highest application score was chosen from each city in the Fourth District. 

The honorees for the Third Annual Fourth District Kindness Awards were: Erika Robles from the City of Anaheim, Kiara Smith from the City of Brea, Christiane Salts from the City of Buena Park, the Debbie Adams from the City of Fullerton, Shrey Gandhi and Christian Lee from the City of La Habra, and Rosalina Davis from the City of Placentia. 

Vice Chairman Chaffee also awarded Scott Miller from the City of La Habra with the Honorary Kindness Award. 

Erika Robles is the President and Founder of United Across Borders Foundation. By collaborating with local leaders and corporations, she receives donations and provides grocery assistance and staple supply access throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to underserved communities in Anaheim and across Orange County.

Kiara Smith is a 3^rd grade student at Mariposa Elementary School in the City of Brea and was diagnosed with dyslexia in 2020. She not only overcame challenges to become an avid reader, but she created a business, Kiwi Cares Collections, published five children’s books with the assistance of her family, and donates the proceeds of the book sales to the Save the Children nonprofit.

Christiane Salt’s community work is through the Buena Park Rotary Club. She served as President in 2010-2011 and was awarded the Rotary District 5320 Ethics in Leadership Award in 2012 and Buena Park Rotarian of the Year in 2012-2013, due to her passion and work in the quest to eliminate polio, supporting youth at schools and the library through literacy efforts, providing resources to new mothers, and assisting teens and young adults in gaining leadership opportunities.

Debbie is the Vice President of the Woman’s Club of Fullerton. She manages the Club’s fundraising projects, from gathering donations to laying out the logistics, organizing vendors and securing the volunteers and as the Ways and Means Chair, she has doubled the income from their fundraisers. In addition, Debbie volunteers to help other non-profits’ fundraisers including the Jacobs Hulk Strong, Heart Community Homes, 4 Life Animal Rescue, Make a Wish Foundation San Diego, Caterina’s Club, Gary Sinise Foundation, 4 Paws Strong; and several Relay for Life Teams.  

Shrey Gandhi and Christian Lee are juniors at Troy High School in the City of Fullerton. They saw a need to assist elementary school students with transitioning to distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic and created Virtualbuddies.org, a free tutoring program where volunteer tutors teach personalized lesson plans in various subjects to students in 3^rd grade to 6^th grade.

Rosalina Davis is the co-owner of Tlaquepaque Restaurant in the City of Placentia and serves as the Chair for all the downtown events in Placentia, including the City’s Annual Tamale Festival that draws over 15,000 attendees and is the largest Tamale Festival in Orange County. She is also a co-founder of the California State University Fullerton (CSUF) Hispanic Golf Tournament, which has awarded 2,000 incoming CSUF freshmen with $1,500 scholarships and a $1 million endowment to CSUF in perpetuity.

Scott Miller is the Business Manager of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church but will be leaving his position soon and taking his passion for helping his community to become the next Executive Director of the La Habra Collaborative. His efforts have been the backbone of the La Habra Community Food Giving Program, which distributes food and supplies directly to individuals or to other food giving agencies such as the Community Resource Care Center, schools, and churches.

Anaheim High School’s, the oldest high school in the Anaheim Union High School District and third oldest high school in Orange County, dance team performed a dance routine, which was choreographed by Oscar Gonzalez.
